Janine Brown

I grew up in Los Angeles, California and after receiving a degree in Art Practice from the University of California, I have made my home and studio in Berkeley. I am inspired by the arts and philosophies of traditional Asia, as well as by minimalists such as Agnes Martin and Robert Mangold.
I like to work with lines and simple shapes because I can create a simple composition, then keep tweaking the color to create spaciousness, luminosity, and presence. As I go too far in one direction, I am drawn back to a different approach--slowly filling out the circle from pattern to simplicity, rich color to monochrome, smooth to varied texture, spontaneity to restraint. Aiming for emptiness and fullness. Repetition and variation. Time after time. Exploration of how paint on a flat surface can embody the energy of this moment.
