Born in Toronto, Canada in 1980, Joyce Camilleri lives and maintains a studio in Malta. She is a member of the Department of Visual Arts of the Faculty for the Built Environment at the University of Malta.

Camilleri’s visual language emerges from extensive training in drawing and printmaking, both of which inform her painting method. Her work pushes the boundaries of graphic elements, creating representational and quasi-abstract visual metaphors that blur the line between the real and the imaginary. She explores visual concepts of poetic space through ongoing material research, with an emphasis on artistic process rather than subject matter. Artistic intent and process-led practices remain interchangeable within her work.

Camilleri has received extensive training in art pedagogy, theory, and practice both in Malta and abroad. Her studies include a period at the Freie Universität, Berlin (2004), and fine art masterclasses at the Internationale Sommeracademie fur Bildende Kunst in Salzburg with Tobias Pils (2019). She also studied under Michael Morgner in 2005 and 2007 and was awarded a scholarship in expanded drawing practice.

Camilleri holds an M.Ed. (Artist Teacher) from the University of the West of Scotland (2017), a Diploma in Fine Art Printmaking from the Malta School of Art (2008), and a B.Ed. (Hons) in Art from the University of Malta (2002).
