Katrina Varlam

I am a graphic designer by
day and an artist on weekends. Here’s a few
unsorted facts about me.

I lived for six years in Vietnam and that’s where I
started creating consistently. One small town
there completely stole my heart and the series
“Hoi An” is dedicated to it. The notebooks with
these artworks are still selling in a store in Hanoi.

My day job and primary profession is graphic
design, and I think it shows in my works. I feel
the need to deliver the message with the minimal
means — limited color palette, limited details.

All the works presented on this page are created digitally
as it gives me the necessary freedom of making
mistakes and changing my mind. It also allows
me to create on the go and capture what I see
instantly.

It’s important for me to have a plot in an artwork
even if I’m the only one who knows about it.
I enjoy creating a feeling of tension, as if
something is about to happen but you’re not sure
what exactly. The moment of stillness, one
second before — something.
