Kirsten Murray

I am an artist based in Cork City, Ireland, currently working mostly in the medium of mosaic, although my background is in drawing and painting. I create new and original fine art mosaics constructed from a variety of materials, most of which are recycled, donated, foraged or found. The process of my work celebrates the renewal of energy and matter in a very literal sense, seeking to solidify dreams by uniting disparate shards of debris left over from everyday life. Most of the images I render come from unconscious scribbles. They resemble stills from the middle of an imaginary story, the beginning and end of which, are opaque at the present time. Some other influences have been newspaper stories, romanesque sculpture, and modern literature.The panels themselves portray imagined stories of family, joy, humour, struggle, savagery, beauty and power. I foster and celebrate the elements of accident and chance which exist at two key stages of my aristic process- the discovery of materials and discovery of subject matter. These properties reflect the necessary fragmentation and chaos of the world, and echo the apparently contradictory condition of choice - infinity with a physical limit .
