‘Agôn’, ‘Aléa’, ‘Mimicry’ and ‘Ilinx’, that is how the French sociologist Roger Callois (1913 – 1978) denominates the 4 forms of games and play in his influential book ‘Man, Play and Games’ (1961). In more understandable terms that is, respectively: 'Competition' (fight, or coping with what you are confronted with), 'Luck' (or coincidence, probability and serendipity), 'Mimesis' (or imitation, simulation and make-belief) and 'Thrill' (excitation, also in the sense of anxiety, loss of control, altering perception). That’s about games and play, but what else is there to talk about when talking about art?
