Martin Ecker (*1963 in Frankfurt am Main Germany) lives and works in Berlin. Ecker began his artistic work as a musician at the age of 14, later adding performance and acting until he began to work with painting, photography and video art.
Martin Ecker is a German photographer and painter who has devoted much of his work to deciphering the reaction of chance and intention. His fascination with experimenting with reactive processes is of great importance: the observation, the action and reaction, the staging. In addition, Ecker has developed unique methods, such as the use of living organisms in photography or oxidation processes in painting. Space, time and light are recurring themes. His works can be found in international collections, companies, private collectors and art lovers.
The artist Ecker can neither paint a portrait nor a charming landscape. Nor does he know how perspective works or which color theory should follow. The artist is not interested in that. For Ecker a too narrow corset. His driving force and training is curiosity, the exploration of reactive processes coupled with an imagination that changes as a work is created. Jokingly, Ecker describes that the way he works reminds him of a love affair.
Time and again, Ecker has been asked to follow this exact path by big-name artists. Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead, whom Ecker met on a trip to Asia immediately after the death of Jerry Garcia, or Jaz Coleman of Killing Joke, with whom he had a friendship that lasted for years, have confirmed Ecker's unorthodox way and encouraged him to do nothing else.
