The painter and printmaker, Motoko Kamada, moved from her native Japan to California in 1995.
She trained at both the San Franicisco Art Institute and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago where she earned her BFA in painting in 2004.
The paintings explore her native culture and family history in a uniquely modern context that yields expressive and deeply colorful figurative abstractions. The wood cut prints on fine paper are often purely abstract iterations of multiple patterned layers.
