Marianne Schovsbo

Marianne Schovsbo’s Paintings are inspired by the world’s beautiful landscapes. Abstract themes of nature and water coupled with the light and energy that can be found in our wilder places, dominate Marianne’s vibrant work. Paintings are in linseed-based oils, on both small and large professionally stretched canvases. The style is based on classical oil painting techniques and materials, but with a new and refreshing abstract expressionistic view on perspective and design. All in all, Marianne’s focus on our stunning landscapes allows us to remember the places we love.

Marianne now lives and paints in Half Moon Bay, California. She continues to be inspired by, and to capture the expressive beauty of the many wild landscapes she travels through.

Marianne also continually enters exhibitions, the most recent one being the Women's View in San Mateo County, California.

Marianne has sold, collaborated, rented and donated her paintings to private collections, foundations and homes in Canada, the US and in Europe. Her paintings hang in public spaces as well as in corporations providing color and life to our busy lives.

Marianne was born in Denmark and was first taught to paint and draw by her grandmother, a watercolorist, who traveled the Danish and Swedish countryside with Marianne. Arriving in Canada in the mid ‘70’s, Marianne received formal and classical art training with Ingeborg Raymer at the Shadbolt Centre for Arts near Vancouver, British Columbia. Under the tutelage and apprenticeship of Ingeborg Raymer, Marianne developed her classical techniques, but also how to incorporate movement and feeling into her work. Marianne’s love and inspiration of landscapes were fostered during the many hours she spent outdoors drawing and painting the lakes, gardens and rural areas around Vancouver. Throughout her university studies, Marianne worked as a freelance artist, etching detailed drawings and exploring various mixed media. She also moved into and experimented with larger scale landscape pieces, using watercolor, ink as well as oil pastel.

Oil painting has become Marianne’s primary media for the past 15 years. The versatile nature of the oil medium allows her to play with perspective and create the feelings of depth and free flowing movement in intense colors. Marianne began winning serious attention when she was just twelve. "Girl Walking Her Dog, Oil Pastel, Marianne Schovsbo, Age Twelve, Female, Burnaby, British Columbia, 1978", was an honorable mention piece displayed at the 1978 Commonwealth Games held in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

More recently, Marianne continues to excel and explore as an oil painter, winning a commendation at the 2017 for the Women's View Exhibition in San Mateo County, California.
