My practice is driven by a pervasive sense of otherness. As an autistic, invisibly disabled, black woman in the diaspora, my gaze explores liminal spaces. I am particularly fascinated by preconscious thought and the possibility of decolonised spaces; the subliminal expression of misunderstood and under-appreciated patterns of behaviour and thought, and their existence and/or oppression in hierarchical structures.
I love working with acrylics because of their versatility. Short open times enable the capture of powerful but fleeting and transient emotions that overwhelm, incapacitate then abandon me.
My paintings do not capture a specific scene or notion. They represent a mode of thinking through and with an idea.
I want my audience to experience the work as unhindered as possible. For this reason, lengthy explanations of the inspiration or methods of working are not provided.
