Artist’s Statement:
In my work of creating abstract monotypes and acrylic paintings, I am absorbed in the spontaneous and experimental process of mixing inks and paints and applying them in unconventional ways. Exploring art materials and techniques inspires new color combinations, compositions and visual textures.
My approach as an artist developed/evolved from my work with very young children. An art experience for a child is about the process—the feelings derived from exploring the properties of a particular medium. I approach my art the same way I approach my work with young children…mindfully. Presence and the suspension of beliefs enable me to hear, see, and feel the truth of the materials and medium at hand. In this state, when thoughts arise---experiences, memories, conflicts, conversations, those ideas are recognized and may be evident in the way in which I roll my brayer. As the thought is released from my mind, my focus returns to the sensory experience of print making until the next idea comes forth. There is a balance in this dialogue of being in the moment and reflecting on life’s experiences.
