Paul Morrow

Paul has a reflective approach to practice; this is often provoked by looking at other artists and their work and considering how they developed their artistic enquiry. Artists have always been important to his work in seeing the possibilities of painting. This has been explored in greater depth in his Homage series, offering a point of reference, departure, and disruption for artistic enquiry. His work also explores the physical act of painting, anchored in the moment and the immediacy of the gesture. Working on either wood or paper, the material qualities of these are inherent to Paul’s practice and these are fully acknowledged and honoured through the working process. Working automatically marks are applied and then considered. An intervention is then made to keep or remove the marks, shapes and compositions are explored resulting in a creative enquiry that often spans several pieces of work. The compositions unfold over time through this process of application and excavation, in a manner that could be described as an intuitive; a dialectical conversation mediated by paint.
