Phil Wilkinson

After leaving the RCA in 1981, I exhibited briefly in London before moving to East Anglia. My work is a celebration of the environments I find myself in whether it be expansive coastlines, peaceful meadows, dramatic mountains or chaotic cities.
Many of my drawings are done ‘on the spot’ with the materials being used quite freely. A daub of paint here or a scratch of ink there contributes in its own way to the atmosphere and spontaneity of the piece. Although direct and expressionistic in style, the work also contains elements of ambiguity verging on surrealism. The subject matter depicted is often used as a vehicle for other ideas. Sometimes photographs are used too, especially for the larger paintings which are done back at the studio. In these, memories and other reflections are also considered.
My work is in private collections across the country and in the Aldrich Collection at Brighton.
