Artist Statement

The unsettling and unheimlich relationship between women and nature has amalgamated in to feminised monsters that haunt the fringes of society; shape-shifters that morph with the moon and straddle the border between civilisation and the primal wilderness.
Cusworth performs her own primitivism in ritualistic acts to explore woman's role as "˜other' to the male in discourse with the animistic cultures role as "˜the other' to civilized society. Developing a body of totemistic sculpture and photography the work toys with the patriarchal representation of the primal women as a savage and a deviant.
