Rebecca Skelton

I work in painting, sculpture, drawing, and as an extension of sculpture, jewelry.
In painting, I begin my artwork as an experiment with a particular set of colors. For sculpture, I look at my materials and elements to see what images or concepts they can provoke. The goal is to see what expression emerges from the various combinations of the colors and material itself. Because I have so often practiced life drawing, it was inevitable that the figure would occasionally emerge in my work. My drawings use the human figure as the imagery. They are a discipline, drawn directly from the model. The medium and paper varies depending on the particular emotion I am trying to convey. Painting, sculpture, and drawing, as practiced by me, are required to have deeper meanings than simple esthetics. Jewelry allows me to escape from meaning. I am able to use the dimension of sculpture with the colors from painting to create functional beauty.
