Gadfly, writer, raconteur, therapist. The appellation of the "artist" is all that is left, and I use it out of convenience, not out of any over-relating to the notion of "being an artist." As far as that goes, "being an artist" is comprised of how one lives every day, not by some medium of expression or passion for or against. You either are or you are not. And it's not that important.
Much too much, some practical exploration of ideas, long ago. I studied Philosophy because Motherwell did, I think. And so began my love affair with abstract expressionism. It is an enduring, torrential, sometimes placid affair that has lasted 40 years. My early work is long gone. I discovered that my best piece, a large-scale American flag painting inspired by Jasper Johns, was destroyed in a fire. I've spent many years writing and working, and now, at 54, I have a return journey to make.
