My work may be said to be exploring a visual language that moves subtly between figuration and abstraction, but which is neither narrative or symbolic. The pictures are built up of layers of paint, using various techniques. Much of my work relies on a distillation of memories which for many of us vary from the theatre of our lives. My experiences range from walking in vast landscapes to the minutiae of domestic life and much that lies in-between.
The lyrical quality found in these works is expressed through colours super-imposed on one another, or in a line or circle of pencil. The colours and shapes in these paintings shift and play through an arc of emotions, forming and dissolving like memories, which advance and recede in the mind's eye. Gestural marks are scratched or gouged into the paint, revealing a palimpsest of communications.
