Born in Taipei, Taiwan, Su Ruan immigrated to the U.S. at the age of 14. He grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area and graduated from the University of California, Berkeley with a B.A. in Architecture. Subsequently he studied under Michael McKinnell, Imre Halasz, and Maurice K. Smith at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he received a Master of Architecture.
Inspired by fabric architecture, Ruan began to sculpt space with fabrics and light in 2002. His explorations range from small sculptures to large site-specific installations, and he has shown work at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Velvet da Vinci, Limn Gallery, 111 Minna Gallery, American Institute of Architects Gallery, The Lab, South By Southwest, and others. In addition, he has executed numerous commissioned works for architectural and interior projects.
