Stuart Dodman

Stuart Dodman is a British artist based in Brighton whose practice explores the interdependence of drawing and painting, creating works that are as much about psychological and emotional space as they are about material process. His paintings often reference interior spaces, frames, and everyday objects—such as lightbulbs—not as literal depictions, but as recurring forms that evoke a sense of containment, memory, and psychological depth. Dodman approaches each painting as a search—uncovering forms through the removal of material, where absence becomes as significant as presence.

Working primarily with monochromatic oil on canvas, Dodman’s process involves layering, carving, and mark-making, allowing images to emerge through subtraction. The marks made in this way are permanent: once carved or drawn into the surface, they cannot be erased, making each gesture significant and irreplaceable.
