I have drawn for as long as I can remember, my childhood endeavours becoming more proficient through my determined practice over the years. Throughout my adult life I have continued to draw, an activity that gives me great pleasure and satisfaction.
I am an enthusiastic student of the techniques of the Old Masters and their widely varying portrayals of the human body, common to all, unique to each, and always challenging and inspiring to depict creatively.
I am self-taught and paint in watercolour and, more recently, acrylic. I use a limited palette and only 3 or 4 top-quality brushes. I utilise the storehouse of impressions I have built up from my travels as a musician. My subconscious reworks these initial ideas in vivid, remembered dreams which become the inspirations for my work.
Miles had his first solo exhibition of oils at the Towngate Exhibition Centre, Essex. Entitled “A Different Approach to Surrealism”, it was a result of the influence of the surrealists, Salvador Dali, Max Ernst and Yves Tanguy.
When Miles moved on board a boat on Kent’s Medway River he began drawing and painting the water scenes that surrounded him and took up watercolour, a medium he felt was more suited to his subject matter. He was invited by the Francis Iles Gallery to become one of their represented artists and he has exhibited at their national Winter Exhibitions and their own Silver Jubilee Exhibition.
Miles relocated to Johannesburg, South Africa on a music opportunity where he established himself as a leading session musician and bandleader. Despite his hectic music schedule he continued to draw and paint and fulfil commissions to private clients. When he and his family decided to build another boat he crossed the country to Cape Town and the sea, establishing himself yet again with live gigs and exhibiting his art work with The Art Route. He also exhibited in group shows at Spier Wine Estate and the Mount Nelson Hotel.
