If I had to give my work a label, it would be New Regionalism. It would only be “new” because it is current, and also because Regionalism has historically loaded meaning that my work doesn’t carry. However, I do see what I am doing as a continuation of that tradition.
I am not interested in what I call one-liner art, which is a large proportion of the art being made by current practitioners, especially ones with the closest ties to academia. I believe the vein of substantive work which can come from a critique of the museum/gallery system, the examination of the relationship of the work to the viewer, “word” art, art that references, reframes, and/or repackages significant iconic artworks, art that seeks to juxtapose the disparate just to attempt to create that which hasn’t been done before, etc., is played out. It is overly analytic, while at the same time being obvious, unintelligent, “on the nose”, and just plain uninteresting.
I am interested in place. I am interested in what happened or is going to happen in that place, whether it is yesterday or in the distant past. I am interested in decay. I am interested in menace. I am interested in what is just outside the frame. I am interested in what is just under the ...
Besides an extensive background in architecture from the University of Michigan, Ferriby studied gas welding at Austin Community College, apprenticed at James Starr Metalsmithing in Pontiac, Michigan, then received his Master of Fine Arts in metals from Cranbrook Academy of Art. He is currently immersing himself in Printmaking.
