Susan Brandt: Biography & Artist’s Statement :
Susan Brandt is an emerging artist without any formal training in art, although her father, Rolf Brandt, was an artist and teacher. She was brought up surrounded by art and early influences were her father’s beautiful book illustrations of the 1940s as well as his powerful later (1950s & 60s) paintings and constructions.
She has been making her own pictures since the late 1980s but was only recently persuaded to sell her work, with an exhibition at the Avivson Gallery in Highgate, London, in 2018; her first solo exhibition in Hampstead, 2023, and another projected for the Artree gallery near Basel, Switzerland.
Susan’s work centres on varying abstract drawings on paper, which she has tried to form into categories (Perspex, Ephemeral, Foldings, Triangles, Molluscs, Sculptural, Surreal, etc.). She uses graphite, black ink, gold marker or pencil and white, cream or coloured pastels on different types of coloured or textured papers. Self-taught, Susan Brandt is an emerging artist, whose practice centres on abstract drawings made totally by hand on different papers, with pencil and pen, utilising gold marker or gold pencil, white, cream and coloured pastels, black ink and graphite.
Inspired by a box of perspex which belonged to her father, Rolf, she is influenced by Ben Nicholson, Fernand Léger, Naum Gabo, as well as the Bauhaus and the Picasso works she used to see at the Chateau Grimaldi in Antibes; Hans Arp, Victor Vasarely and Paul Klee and had a major impact.

Susan Brandt started making pictures in the 1980s but has only recently been persuaded to sell her work, which was shown first at an exhibition in 2018, at the Avivson Gallery, London. Her solo exhibition at the Amberden Gallery (in October, 2023 which went on for several months) showed larger and a more recent series of drawings. A forthcoming exhibition is projected at the Artree gallery in Basel, Switzerland.
