Artist Bio – Tim McGuire

I am a photographer, painter, and occasional filmmaker, deeply rooted in the landscapes that shaped me. Raised amid the striking beauty of Southwest Colorado, I first connected with the visual world through the vastness of high desert plateaus and the quiet grandeur of the Four Corners region. That early awe never left me—it simply evolved.

My formal education in photography and graphic arts began in Flagstaff, Arizona, and continued through decades of hands-on experience in Seattle, where I lived for over 30 years. There, while working in commercial and editorial photography, I quietly nurtured a more personal, meditative body of work—landscapes, textures, and natural forms that spoke to something deeper. That work, once private, now stands at the center of my practice.

Over the years, my creative path has broadened to include painting and filmmaking. My approach is intuitive but rooted in discipline—shaped by classical influences like Ansel Adams, Georgia O’Keeffe, Andrew Wyeth, and the painters in my own family, whose legacy runs through my hands. I started studying photography in 1983 with black and white film and darkroom techniques. I eventually graduated from Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona with a Bachelor of Science Industrial Supervision in Graphic Arts and Photography. I went on to be a freelance commercial and editorial photographers assistant learning the ins and outs of the business by working with over 100 hundred different working photographers. I then took a job producing photo shoots for stock photography and then a few years later starting my own stock photo business. The digital revolution eventually crushed the business model for stock photography and soon thereafter I started being more of what I had been in the beginning, an artist! I also started painting at that point. I took a bunch of classes through several different museum programs and fine art academies in Seattle, Washington. As of December 2023 I have moved with my family to Twisp, Washington in the Methow Valley of North Central Washington in the foothills of the Cascade mountains. Back to that place where the mountains meet the high desert.
