Wendy Bird

I have been a painter-printmaker all my life. After school I went to art college in Amersham, UK to study painting and printmaking. My favourite subject-matter was flowers, trees and hedgerows in oils on a large scale and lithography, particularly fantasy and folkloric themes.
I studied History of Art at University in Leicester, UK and afterwards took a teaching certificate in ceramics.
I was a founder member of the Equinox Theatre Company in which I acted, sang danced and made the puppets. It was one of the first medieval revival companies in the country.
I taught art and art history in a convent for a few years and then moved to Spain where I stayed for many years. I lived and worked in a beautiful garden studio with my dog and friends came to visit me. I painted them in my garden, sitting and thinking, My studio was open to everyone and once I had a visit from a snake!
I studied etching and engraving in a Barcelona studio and since then most of my printmaking is drypoint engraving.
Now I am back in England where I paint the trees, plants, rivers, ponds, insects, birds and animals near to wherever I am living and I enjoy listening to classical music , particularly Schubert, while I'm working.

• After school I studied Painting with Sir Romeo di Girolamo RA and Lithography with Henry Trivick RA, (who also taught Stanley Spencer), at Amersham College of Art for three years.
• I then studied for a BA hons in History of Art and Design in the Modern Period at Leicester Polytechnic.
• After that I trained as a ceramics teacher at Reading University.
• During the early 80s I was a puppeteer, dancer, singer and founder member of the Equinox Theatre Company in Newbury.
• In 1984 I went to Barcelona where I studied intaglio printmaking (etching and engraving) in the studio of Marta Moncada and developed my glazing techniques in the municipal art school.
• I moved to the Pyrenees in 1995 and completed a PhD on the work of Goya in 1999
• I have been living between England and Spain for twelve years
• I have exhibited widely since 1976 in England and internationally.
• A few years ago I trained as a Yoga teacher in Croatia and India (Himalayas).
