The skills I've learned as an analog film and digital photographer and advertising creative director are all utilized in my work. My early influences were large-format black-and-white photographers of the California Central Coast and the impressionistic landscape painters of the 1900s. My Southwest images begin as black-and-white photographs, from both negative and infrared digital images. I "abstract" the images and then paint them, using multiple thin layers of oil paint. Larger sizes are available by commission.
I am largely self-taught as an artist. I was introduced to black-and-white photography as part of my journalistic studies in college. I received more formal photographic training through participation as a student and assistant in various photography workshops through the Friends of Photography in Carmel, CA. My early work was influenced by this West Coast "straight" large-format approach to black-and-white photography. Following the advice of one of my workshop instructors to “find something I loved and photograph it over and over," I began a series of images of live oak trees of the South. This evolved into a long-term (30-plus years) project that continues today. A sampling of my work over the past three decades is contained in my six books.
