Gary Winterford

I was born and grew up in Stratford in East London at a time when much of the area still bore the scars of the war.
As a child of the 70's I watched my neighbours being re-housed as part of the instigation of the slum clearance, including the demolition of my own home.
This period of my life affected me deeply.
The time I spent wandering around these empty homes, witnessing the left behind 'things' (deliberately or by design) would subconsciously inform my subject matter of my paintings many years later.
When starting any new work I try to tap into these memories and the emotions they bring me.
