The Dutch coast is located on the edge of a huge drowned country: Doggerland. Due to global warming, more and more ice melted further north and slowly but surely the area became flooded. About 8,000 years ago the water stopped at the precursors of our current beaches. At least, until now. Current cl...

About the Artist

Elise Eekhout

Netherlands

I am a visual artist working at the intersection of painting and graphic design. My practice explores the language of light, texture, and text. Letters fascinate me not only as carriers of meaning but also as abstract forms — beautiful shapes that dissolve the moment we begin to read them.

By combining traditional techniques with contemporary materials such as gold and silver leaf, I create layered works that shift with light and perspective. Depending on where the viewer stands, words emerge or vanish, landscapes solidify or dissolve. My paintings therefore never remain static: they are living surfaces, changing with time, movement, and light.
Recurring themes in my work are memory, transformation, and our relationship with nature. From abstract landscapes to text-based compositions, I seek to evoke both wonder and reflection. My art connects the fragility of human stories with the enduring rhythms of the earth, offering viewers a space for contemplation.

My work has been displayed at institutions such as the Scryption Museum in Tilburg and the Meermanno Museum in The Hague. In 2024, I had the honor of being invited to show my work at the Flower Art Museum in Aalsmeer.

During the pandemic, when everything moved online, an art curator from India discovered my work on Instagram. He was immediately struck by one of my paintings, which led to invitations to exhibit my work at several art events in India. Shortly thereafter, I was approached by a gallery based in Paris. My work even inspired a composer and pianist in New York to create a unique musical piece. Since then, I have exhibited in Italy, Germany, and the United Kingdom. I was also contacted by a gallery in Munich. As a result, my work is now part of private collections in Europe, the U.S., and beyond.
