About the Artist

Sebastian Jauregui

Germany

I was born in Colombia and grew up in Germany, experiencing a clash of cultures that has always given me a particular perspective on contrasting social dynamics.

I studied in the UK from 2014 until 2019, graduating as a Fashion Designer from the Royal College of Art in London and a few years earlier with a BA from the University for the Creative Arts. Alongside my studies, I took advantage of my drawing skills to create large commissioned works for collectors around the city. This helped me to finance my life in London and eventually motivated me to pursue fine art as a career. Since, I have been developing a unique painting style with a designer's approach, seeking to reach a global audience with new and original ideas.

Currently, my work is, in essence, a social commentary on evolving class identities and instinctive human behavior in social circles, especially in present times as we find ourselves surrounded by new technologies. I particularly take an interest in the notion of altering the character of one's true self by concealing insecurities and aiming to stand out by fitting in.

In most of my figurative paintings, I employ a high degree of abstraction to represent the constructed nature of the false image we present. Facets, layers, fragments, and contrast all come together to create a definitively artificial presentation of identity within my subjects. Through my practice, I seek to explore the emotional impetus behind this performance of self in connection to expectations of Western society, fear of exclusion, and the psychological effects of maintaining an illusion.

My compositions are primarily influenced by digital technology, including an Artificial Reality that enters our everyday lives through face filters on social media apps and the proliferation of perfection within media imagery.

I find it paradoxical how approval towards certain lifestyles seems to grow with expectations almost demanding to be authentically ourselves. Yet, at the same time, self-altering tools are increasingly available. Through my art, I negotiate the expectations of self-love amongst an ever-growing supply of self-manipulation and disguise—it seems a balance between the two in our modern world is impossible and simply a stubborn illusion.

Currently, my works are held within private collections across Europe and the US. I am now living and working in Cologne, Germany.
