I'm fascinated by the discourse of freedom expressed in a more or less orthodox language of geometry, even if “the grid", a system of intersecting lines discovered anew again and again, is one of the most stereotypical visual devices.
As Ad Reinhardt stated more than 60 years ago, the first rule and absolute standard of fine art is the purity of it. The more uses, relations and “additions” a painting has, the less pure it is. The more stuff in it, the busier the work of art, the worse it is. “More is less.”
Therefore I'm trying to save most of his Twelve Technical Rules ( or : Twelve Things to Avoid) :
1. No texture, no accidents or automatism.
2. No brushwork or calligraphy.
3. No sketching or drawing, as everything should be worked in mind beforehand.
4. No forms, no volume or mass.
5. No design, as “design is everywhere”.
6. No colors, as “colors are barbaric and unstable”.
7. No light.
8. No space.
9. No time.
10. No size or scale, as feeling in art have no relation to physical size.
11. No movement, as art should be still.
12. No object, no subject, no matter, neither pleasure nor pain.
