About The Artwork

I was admiring the beautiful colonial buildings in Recife, Brazil. Most of them were studies in pastels, but this one was in the midst of being painted or vandalized. The new paint was deep blue. I changed the handprint to red to symbolize the red, white, and blue of the American flag. The other colors blended together in subtle variations. This image shouts with raw emotion. The purpose of art, as I see it, is to evoke an emotional response from the viewer. The emotion can be positive or negative. As I write this (July 2023), there is much violence around the world, especially in my country of America with more than one mass shooting every day. Though different in subject but similar in composition, this image reminds me of Robert Capa’s “Death of a Loyalist Soldier“ (Falling Soldier) at the moment of being shot in the Spanish Civil War. Ironically, there has been much discussion about whether or not the Falling Solder was faked. Nevertheless, this singular image made Capa famous. Born Endre Ernő Friedmann to a Jewish family in Austria-Hungary, Capa changed his name to avoid persecution. He went on to become the greatest war photographer in history. Often putting his life at risk, he was the only professional photographer at the Allied landings on D-Day in World War II. Capa himself died when he stepped on a land mine in Indochina. May this image stimulate you to think about your personal values, as well as the values of modern society.

Betty Dabney is a retired professor of public health who has been a serious photographer for over twenty years. She has won awards in juried shows, had one-person shows, and exhibited in prestigious galleries. She says, “I strive to capture the essence of a subject, to make it seem more real than reality itself.” There is no formula for her work. Each image is what the subject calls for, whether it be color or black & white, contemporary or antique, figurative or abstract. Originally a painter, her work has a luminous, painterly quality that can make the viewer wonder if the image was real or not. She cites the Impressionists, Paul Cézanne, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Eliot Porter, and Ansel Adams as major influencers of her work. She does not work in a studio. Rather, she captures colours and compositions in the real world with her artistic vision that beauty is everywhere; we only need look for it. The common thread running through all of her work is to evoke a reaction of pleasant surprise, for the viewer to think, “WOW – That is so beautiful!” Her work engages the viewers at a deep level and shows them how to see the world in new ways. After all, that is the nature and purpose of art. Come, let us make this beautiful journey together.
