ABOUT THE ARTWORK
This painting is a playful meditation on how we live now, living parallel lives in physical and digital worlds. Worlds in which we continually connect and reject one another. One world constructed by social codes, the other by 0s and 1s. Blending the uniform language and symbols of the Internet with the expressiveness of the human touch, such as paint drips, embroidery, pencil marks, and brush strokes, this painting explores our current state of being. The full title of the painting is 01110111 01100101 00100000 01100001 01110010 01100101 00100000 01100110 01100001 01101101 01101001 01101100 01111001 00001010 - which is binary code for "we are family". On the bottom left of the painting is an embroidered line from a favourite poem that translates to: my heart is a lute suspended, when touched it resounds.

Shirin Majid (b.1974) is a British-Kashmiri visual artist and creative director of South London based studio Everything You See Here. Through her paintings, collages, sculptures, and digital works, she distills complex thoughts, situations and memories into meditative experiences that spark the social imagination, or just a moment of reverie. She has studied art and design at the New School in New York and the Art Academy in London, and is currently a postgraduate student in the MA Fine Art: Digital programme at Central Saint Martins.
