Moldova
Cristina Balan is an abstract artist born in Moldova, where she began studying art at the age of five. Very early on, her works were exhibited both locally and abroad. The fall of the Soviet Union paused Cristina’s creative ascension and she pursued a successful career in the corporate world. She became a recognized leader in the business community and was later appointed Ambassador to the United States. This vast life journey shapes the depth and authenticity of her artistic vision today. In 2019, after nearly two decades away from painting, Cristina returned fully to her artistic practice. Her works quickly gained public attention for their refined abstract language and symbolic subtlety. Cristina’s paintings explore themes of presence, inner stillness, feminine strength, and the invisible layers of human experience. Her artistic language is both minimalist and profound, where simplicity reveals hidden complexity. Her works possess an otherworldly quality, reflecting a deeply personal visual vocabulary that she has developed over time. Balancing the modern with the timeless, her paintings evoke a sense of something both ancient and contemporary, familiar yet intangible. Each work invites contemplation and emotional resonance, offering a quiet dialogue between the visible and the unseen. Working primarily with high-quality acrylics and molding paste on canvas, and occasionally oil, she builds layered surfaces that embody both material presence and spiritual depth. The creative process is slow and intentional; some works require months to reach their final form, allowing each composition to evolve organically until it achieves balance and uniqueness. Unbound by trends yet often anticipating them, her work is singular in voice - intimate yet expansive - reflecting a sustained search for essence, harmony, and transformation. In 2025, her work was selected by the iconic British i-D Magazine for the Ray-Ban RED campaign. Her paintings have been exhibited in Washington, D.C., New York, Barcelona, Bucharest, Kyiv, and Treviso, and are held in private collections internationally. Through abstraction, Cristina Balan invites the viewer into a space of quiet reflection, where color and form become a language of connection, balance, and transformation.
