ABOUT THE ARTWORK

The idea of the female icon has little to do with real women. The woman in my paintings is an idea about the way I think I should be, the impossible goal of life.

Anna Wilhelmsson, born 1975 in Jönköping, Sweden, is a painter, who’s paintings often deals with subjects such as presence, absence, relations and motion. Her father’s interest in painting and writing poetry, often in combination, put Anna in contact with art at an early age. As a child, Anna often travelled through Europe with her family during summer vacations. These travels included visits to cathedrals, castles and art museums and led Anna to later study Art history at the University. Although studying art, film and literature the interest was more academic than practical much due to lack of self confidence. After experiencing a period of eating disorder in her late teens and early twenties, and a depression in her early thirties Anna took up art and painting and found a way of expressing herself beyond words. Painting has been a way for her to understand both herself and the world around her which is her way to explain the importance of art. After living in the central part of Gothenburg, the second largest city in Sweden, for 10 years she now lives in the country next to fields of Stone Age graves and oak trees and these rural surroundings is easy to see in some of Annas large scale landscape paintings. At first impression Annas paintings are very colorful and vibrant but many of her paintings deals with serious issues such as body ideal, mental illness and broken relations coming from her own experience of living with bipolar disorder. Anna has a Master of Arts in media, aesthetic and narrative and has worked as a teacher at University of Skövde. Anna has been accepted to a number of curated art shows in Sweden and is represented at the municipality of Tidaholm.
