This is a very personal look at the inevitable - the exploration of death and my relationship to the idea. I began this piece working from an antique photograph and while working on the painting, the male subject began to look more and more like my recently deceased father. Eventually I made the decision to paint my father as the subject. He had been a fireman all my life and shared stories of running into burning buildings and other intense crises related to his job. In the painting he is wearing only half a pair of glasses. He wore thick glasses for most of my childhood and later had surgery on his eyes to correct his vision and wore no glasses the rest of his life. I also have seven younger siblings and most of my life my father was the kind of man who could remain calm through chaos - even chaos in burning buildings and in life.

Artist Statement- My artwork takes you to imaginary worlds that are yet to be fully explored. Through my two and three-dimensional works, I explore the struggles and beauty of being human while providing glimpses into our cultural landscape, myths, and the human psyche. I draw inspiration from my love for antique items, furniture, clothing, architecture, and vintage photographs. My sensitivity to nature, color, and light also influences my work. I use a combination of painting, collage, sculpture, and photography to connect the past, present, and future. My pieces incorporate a range of mediums, including oil and acrylic paints, ink drawings, hand-marbled papers, cast-off domestic objects, fabric, vintage portraits, and contemporary digital photographs.
