acrylic paint and rust on paper Very small works are important to Darukhanawala’s practice: miniatures that can capture moments but point to much more in their ready visual manageability and extensive conceptual range. The rust (it’s actual rust, alive in all its moving hum) on the acrylic paint here, the curve, inter alia, are reminiscent of so much in the artist’s work: simple, suggestive shapes that trigger associations and memories, thoughts and ideas; the relation of the object to the frame, itself forming another object; the ever-presence of bareness, of getting to the bottom of things, of an uncompromising desire and search for truth. All these facets of the work contain an essential life movement and story – as indicated by the title. The image is at once truncated and so complete, and this forms no contradiction or disjunction. The image is pleasing, enduring, full of continuance – one can come back to it at different times of the day, month, one’s life and reassess its movement, its effects and ability to prod one out of everyday torpor: looking (over a long period of time) at Darukhanawala’s pictures can become compulsive. As Darukhanawala himself comments: ‘Without the mind or imagination infused into them, images are nothing but a dead visual amusement … at best.’ This image is the very opposite of that inertia.

‘My pictures are songs: explosions of energy, meaning and communication. They are spurs for communication with the self and others.’ (Persi Darukhanawala) Persi Darukhanawala’s minimal pictures explore the uncertainty (and so, de facto, excitement) of life (ars longa, vita brevis). With multivalent richness, Darukhanawala’s painting-songs somehow communicate endless, elusive psychologies rather than reproducing already-known visuals. Like the vibrant songs with which they have polylogues, the paintings are life-embracing, positive but equally critical and the product of a spirit in revolt (‘l’homme révolté’). Darukhanawala has attracted sustained interest from academics, critics, individual collectors as well as design houses and hotels. He was shortlisted for the prestigious Art Olympia 2017 in Tokyo, Japan.
