ABOUT THE ARTWORK

The peony symbolizes many things, including healing and compassion. Self-compassion is being understanding toward ourselves when we make mistakes, fail, experience weakness or pain. Instead of ignoring our pain or beating ourselves up with self-criticism, we can give ourselves the same kindness and compassion as we would a good friend. f-compassion research reveals that individuals who practice the core components are far less likely to suffer from mental health conditions and are more resilient. We can learn how to have more self compassion by being mindful of the language we use towards ourselves and recognizing that we are human, and we don’t have to be perfect to be loved.

Kiki Tolman is a contemporary artist who lives and works in Utah. She grew up in Southeast Louisiana, which is known for its colorful and spicy culture. Her colorful paintings are an expression of life and how “colorful” it can be. She communicates the healing power of art and lifts our spirits. Her bold color style emanates human emotion and expresses the spectrum of emotion. Just as emotions are constantly changing, so is her art- It is characterized by vibrant color, constant change, experimentation, and development. She graduated from UVU 2019 with a Bachelor's in Art and Design and an advanced substance use disorder counseling degree. She recently graduated with her masters in Clinical Mental health and works as a therapist in private practice as well as a substance use disorder counselor in an inpatient facility. She enjoys helping clients rediscover themselves and helps assist and inspire them in living the life they were born to create. She believes that art can remove us from our suffering and bring us personal hope. She feels that great art transcends time and cultural beliefs, communicates directly to our common humanity, and awakens the soul. She hopes her art will facilitate healing hearts and awakening souls.
