I am Kevin Doberstein, specializing in contemporary wood sculpture and paintings, focusing on biomorphic abstractions and stylized Western designs. Growing up in the sawmill and logging industry, I sought to balance the harshness of that world by discovering and transforming the natural beauty of wood into art. My work reflects a modern biomorphic style, often inspired by my admiration for the Southwest (United States), aiming to evoke warmth, spirituality, and happiness. I work primarily with wood, selecting pieces with distinctive grain patterns and contrasting colors to create visually compelling sculptures. I occasionally apply a copper metal coating to enhance the aesthetic and achieve a unique look. Committed to sustainability, I use only responsibly sourced wood, transforming it into fine art and one-of-a-kind stylized creations. Inspired by natural forms and the human body, my style combines freeform biomorphic shapes with stylized human designs. My free form sculptures are organically shaped and abstract, reflecting the natural rhythms and forms found in nature. In contrast, my human figures break away from realism with bold, fragmented designs, creating a distinct visual language. What sets my work apart is my departure from traditional approaches, forging a unique artistic journey and developing original compositional elements. For me, creating art is a meditative and therapeutic process that transforms contemplation and subconscious ideas into tangible works. My goal is to communicate emotion and capture beauty in each finished piece, offering viewers a sense of peacefulness and meditative warmth. I also strive for stylistic innovation, continually pushing the boundaries of techniques to achieve new levels of artistic expression. In my earlier creative periods, my work was more organic, guided largely by the natural qualities of the wood. Over time, I began pushing the medium's boundaries, creating sculptures that conveyed more complete and intentional narratives. This evolution also reflected my personal growth, as I explored themes of empathy and compassion in my art. A recent series I have pursued, beginning in 2024, focuses on Western figurative sculptures inspired by my longing to explore the Southwest desert landscape. This series captures a playful spirit, reflecting visions of warm, sunny days and a sense of harmony and peace, intentionally steering away from the harshness of life.
