About SG Abbott

Susan G Abbott (b. 1957, Regina) is a contemporary artist using acrylics, mixed media and collage, living and working in Toronto, Canada. She has shown her work successfully in group and juried shows in Toronto, as well as solo exhibitions. She is a past-President of the Don Valley Art Club, and a former marketing and management consultant.

“My work is inspired by the Canadian landscape which provides a framework for explorations of color relationships and moods. I frequently sketch outside, and take an annual trip north. I liberally reinterpret to simplify shapes.
Finding the right combinations of color is a quest achieved through frequent re-paintings of passages until I am satisfied, sometimes over a period of months.
Mixed media works are built up in layers, including using papers I create from painted papers."

“I bounce between expressionistic styles and hard-edged styles, and love both for their ability to capture shapes, colors and space. My recent abstract work and collages are increasingly concerned with the creation of a mood and an atmosphere generated with expressive mark making and the layering of collage papers and image transfers of my own creation.”

Abbott’s art education was acquired over many years through private study, and studio workshops.
Studio courses at Haliburton School of Art and Design with Steve Rose, John Leonard, and Al Van Mil; Plein Air with Jennifer Hinrichs at Grand Manan School; At Art Gallery of Ontario with Doug Stratford, Barry Coombs; At Alberta College of Art with Barbara Milne. In addition, many workshops conducted by professional artists.
