In this painting, the statue of liberty is in motion and looks horrified. Its torch is covered with blood and its crown looks flattened. It is clearly fleeing something abhorrent and is crawling on stairs dripping with blood. This painting is a metaphor of the United States (lobbies control democracy, weapons are sold to third world countries, wars are declared to access cheap oil). The US does not appear as enlightening the world but leading it to darkness.
