Giorgio de Chirico was an Italian painter (1888-1978), one of my favorite painters. He invented the “metaphysical painting”; we should say “psychological” today. But at that time psychoanalysis was in its early stages. By looking at Giorgio's painting, we enter a fascinating world. Every detail counts, like a symbol which marks out the discovery of its painting. For example the steam train in the distant, which spits imperturbably its smoke, is always the symbol of the father. His own father was an engineer in railroads in Greece, when he was young. He is present in almost all his paintings. I chose this painting, early work, painted in 1913 (the uncertainty of the poet). It’s a very colored painting with many clear symbols: the labyrinth depicted by columns that symbolize the complexity of the woman and her ruses, since Ariane had been able to take Theseus out of the maze. For his personal case he explained with these symbols the troubles of his mind: a statue of woman, bananas sexual symbols. He is afraid that his father, (always present with the train) who was a very prudish man, will scold him for having looked at women; so he thought he could be rejected by women …
