Illustrated in these works are everyday life situations that have been examined, filtered, dissected and reassembled, often like a collage, with the intention of capturing the mood of the situation, or the feelings that the people are experiencing. The subject matter often comes directly from the artists' life and is a comment on human nature and how we deal with everyday issues, examining the notion of what it is to be human. The work is emotionally driven. Just to feel something that another human being is experiencing is the most important thing. “a man who can beat the horses can do almost anything he makes up his mind to do. He doesn’t belong at the racetrack. He should be on the Left Bank with his mother easel or in the East Village writing an avant-garde symphony. Or making some woman happy. Or living in a cave in the hills.” - Charles Bukowski Betting Slips captures the ordinary and places a touch of nostalgia in it. A painting that highlights the scenes that one takes for granted, the scenes that help make up this very human world.

The bold and striking structural forms present in Stephen Whatcott’s abstract paintings demonstrate instinctive, expressive mark making while still retaining a balanced composition. The emotional impact of the image is always the primary focus of these paintings. Ranging from great, colossal walls of paint to more free-flowing expressive forms, they are built up in many textured layers with each layer referring to the marks made previously throughout the entire process. Composed largely instinctively, the paintings are physical, both in technique and presence, but ultimately attempt to communicate on an emotional level. It is in the fundamental components of vitality, drive and feeling, the things that epitomise being alive, that are being conveyed in these pictures. In 2015 Whatcott won the Painting category of the Secret Art Prize open art competition and in 2018 was shortlisted for the Rise Art Prize. Whatcott is represented by various galleries and consultants based in London, Glasgow and Chicago. His work is held in private collections worldwide.
