About the Artwork Mixed media and methods landscape quilt, easy to hang from the rod sleeves on the top back Materials: Cotton fabrics, cotton batting, thread, wool embroidery yarn I was inspired to make this piece by a winter trip to Quebec I made with my husband a few years ago. Some people see Winter as a bleak and hopeless time, but I love the stillness after a snowfall, the sting of the wind, the crunch of ice-crusted snow underfoot. In this piece, the frozen creek, hand embroidered weeds, and birch trees give the promise of new life to come. The red fence, a surreal addition to the scene, adds a warmth to the chilly, icy landscape. It, along with the barn and silos are the only evidence of activity in an otherwise pristine and snowy landscape. The free-motion quilting adds depth and meaning to the art. In the sky, the wind can be imagined to be blowing briskly, while the snow has settled along the fence and around the trees in distinct patterns. Even the creek has a sense of water moving beneath the ice, waiting to flow freely come the Spring. The rough edge applique of the birch trees and stone, and the hand-embroidered weeds, add dimension to the piece, inviting the viewer to run their fingers over the work to experience the different textures.

I started doing needlework at a young age. I moved from one technique to another, branching out into other forms of creative artistry. I grew up in the Adirondack Mountains of northern New York State, surrounded by an abundance of natural beauty, colors and forms. There was a communal mindset of conservation, preservation, and protection, creating a burgeoning ecological awareness in all who lived there. I now live in Florida, where the landscape is different, but the need to preserve and protect remain just as, or even more, relevant. Travelling the world, experiencing different cultures and environments, I take inspiration from where I have been and the feelings these places evoke. I use remnants or recycled textiles and media whenever possible in my work. It connects me to the places I have been and the life I wish others would live. The creative process is multi-level for me. When I get an idea for a piece, I cannot rest until I have gathered my materials and mapped out a design. The first attempts are not always successful, but I continue with the ideas until I find the right textiles and media for their expression. Then the process becomes more of a joyful journey, fitting and re-fitting the pieces, changing color combinations, until no further adjustments are needed. A sense of peace and rightness prevails as the work gets closer to completion.
