I love the Ukiyo-e prints of Edo period Japan. They are graphic, playful, expressive, and stunningly beautiful. I also love the fact that they were considered a low/popular form in their time, and that now they are revered as great works of fine art. I studied them in college, at a time when I was in love with, and surrounded by, all things Japanese. I chose Japanese as my second language requirement, I was studying Aikido with Yoko Okamoto Sensei at Portland Aikikai, and I was working as a waitress at Koji Osakaya, a popular sushi bar in downtown Portland. My plan was to teach English in Japan when I graduated from college, but somehow I ended up moving to NYC instead. While much of my aesthetic has been profoundly influenced by Ukiyo-e prints, this is my only work that references them directly. ------- All works in Series 22 incorporate a mix of high quality traditional media, including sumi ink, pigment-based india inks, acrylic and watercolor paints, and graphite on 300 gsm Rives BFK printmaking paper that is 100% cotton and acid-free. Each work is signed on the front with my initials, and on the back with my initials, last name, date completed, and the series number. ------- This work ships flat. The work is placed between sheets of acid-free glassine on a piece of foam board, put in a resealable polypropylene sleeve, wrapped with bubble wrap, nested between two pieces of foam board and/or corrugated cardboard shipping inserts, and placed in a cardboard box.

My works are a constant outpouring of singular impressions: clearly isolated images that capture flashes of emotion, changes in perception, or moments of recognition. I give fleeting thoughts as much consideration as monumental ideas: nothing is more important than anything else and every small thing has its place.
