This drawing is inspired by the beauty and power of canyons as landscapes transformed by time and water. The detailed rendering of a canyon is based on the Samaria Gorge in Crete. I am amazed by how canyons are carved slowly over time by water. Water is honored in the drawing by the wavy line at the bottom. (In many cultures, wavy lines symbolize water.) I create works that invite people to connect with the poetic meaning of the world. Using images from nature and symbolic patterns from ancient cultures, my detailed, layered charcoal drawings can be used as simple reminders of beauty or as objects for spiritual contemplation. As an artist, I’ve been impacted by my study of neuroscience and my work as an experience researcher. Both disciplines have taught me about the complexity of perception and the power each of us holds to shape how we see the world. I believe that we need more opportunities in our lives to pause, to reflect, to take in just how mysterious it is to be alive. My drawings provide this space.

My drawings are like poems. Each small work on paper provides an intimate space for beauty and reflection. I love to mix materials—like thick matte black gesso with a bright wash of water color, delicate charcoal pencil with gestural ink – to make creative scenes that become their own world. As an artist, I’ve been impacted by my study of neuroscience and mysticism. Both have taught me about the wonderous state between knowing and unknowing. I believe that we need more opportunities in our lives to pause, to reflect, to take in just how mysterious it is to be alive. My drawings and prints invite reflection. The symbols I use are recognizable (like rainbows, flowers, figures) but the images I create always contain an element of mystery that allow for multiple levels of meaning. It’s always wonderful to hear the interpretations people bring to the work.
