About The Artwork

The images in this series grew out of a fantasy. Feeling the emotional strain of impending move to London, away from Johannesburg, the city of my birth and my home until my 40’s. I imagined being untethered to place or time, and so not having to fear separation and loss. A fantasy, of course, because we are always attached to the places where the narrative of our lives is played out, even the difficult parts of the story. My hope is that these images inspire a feeling of lightness and freedom…a temporary escape from the reality of gravity, time and unavoidable emotional attachment. The material - woollen dust - reminds us of the transience of everything; including our lives and the histories we are part of. My images are often influenced by historical Japanese images in which even scenes of everyday life feel very much like fantasy, and where even the harshest and most painful subject is made beautiful. The aesthetic - and often the brilliance - of graphic novels often plays a role in the development of my imagery. The vividness of the obviously fantastical realities depicted are useful in the construction of my own fantasy landscapes.

I am a South African artist based in Cape Town, South Africa. I lectured in Sculpture in Johannesburg before moving to London in 2007. I returned to South Africa in 2020. My work reflects my concern with our emotional dependence on the natural environment, and our conflicted and inconsistent relationship with other animals. I am preoccupied with the idea, reflected in my artistic practice, that we suffer some kind of emotional disruption when we are inattentive and don’t recognise our duty of stewardship to the natural world of which we are a part. The result is internal, or emotional, chaos - individual or collective - in the human world which is expressed in external crises; in environmental destruction, for example. My work is included in numerous private and public collections, including the Johannesburg Art Gallery, The Durban Art Gallery, The UNISA (University of SA) Art Gallery, The SA Reserve Bank, Standard Bank Collection, WAM (Art Museum of the University of the Witwatersrand).
