I selected this individual to paint because visually he passes through the centuries with ease. He looks as much like a Roman gladiator or Egyptian king as he does the professional basketball player he is. Like certain warriors he owns a fierceness, tremendous motion, and a gait like silk. Resembling royalty, he possesses an elegant aloof presence. Although he is essentially a force, I was interested in capturing something else in this painting; his self-reflection and ability to take his mind away from the moment. (This painting was begun at The Boston Garden during the shoot around warm up for a game between the MiamiHEAT and the Boston Celtics.)
