This bold ceramic basket is a decorative but functional piece. It is decorated freely with blue, pink and black glazes on a white decorated ceramic body. My approach was to celebrate the sturdy reliability of the clay, working with the plasticity of the clay to form a four stranded twist in the handle. This piece was decorated spontaneously, by responding to the form and to my own internal rhythm. It is fired to stoneware (1260 degrees centigrade) so is very strong and is fairly heavy, with four feet that are shaped in a figure of eight, keeping it very stable. This work is bold and would sit well as a centrepiece. It is particularly good at showing autumn fruits, especially apples!

My work focuses on the figure, both in the abstract forms permitted in functional pottery and through figurative ‘gesture’ sculptures. Working with the freedom of these forms expresses aspects of myself and of my life experience. Having suffered major burn trauma in my twenties, these injuries continue to be accommodated in my daily life. The dialogue in my work at present focuses on womanhood and the results, or lessons, of those experiences. Clay’s capacity to reveal hidden, sometimes ancient knowledge is an act of transformation, which I return to again and again. I graduated in Ceramic Design from Central St Martins in 2013. I first began to make pottery following a major accident (2004) and through attending courses with Sandy Brown at her studio in Appledore in Devon. I am a qualified meditation teacher and combine the innately mindful qualities of working with clay with these approaches in my pottery teaching studio in Elstree, UK
