About Paula Baader
I am inspired by private rooms, public spaces, floral elements and patterns. It is the richness of the shapes that carries importance, rather than the stories and meanings of the motives. It is all about the lines, strokes, spots and contrasts. Only the formal matters. Literally speaking, semantics are unimportant and syntax is everything. The paintings begin as fully rendered sketches in my head and are promptly translated into works on canvas. There is no intermediate stage, no scribbling, no sketching. At first sight, the paintings seem abstract. At a closer look, one recognises many figurative elements. This is precisely what matters to me - the resolution of the motives and the very small line between abstraction and figuration. Many gentle strokes, loosely placed colours and their subtle appearance create a sketchy atmosphere, reminiscent of a promenade on canvas. Vague memories and fleeting moments of my sourroundings are being evoked in my paintings.
