About nel ten wolde
Born in the Netherlands, Nel ten Wolde emigrated to Australia in 1986. Nel also travelled extensively throughout Europe, South America, Asia and Australia. In Melbourne, where Nel’s studio is based she work’s predominantly on paintings in oil. The main influence and inspiration for her work is the Australian landscape. Nel has worked with the Australian landscape during all seasons of the year and is particularly drawn by the vastness of the space, which you only experience when you travel through the desert, and which is also reflected in her work. Nel also travels to Europe for several months each year. This is echoed in Nel’s work, which portrays a juxtaposition of different countries, landscapes and cultures that she has been exposed to. Nel has particularly drawn inspiration from walking thousands of kilometers on old pilgrimage routes across Spain, as well as working as an Artist in residence. The work produced is largely a mixture of photos and collages. Landscape is the main subject of the work, with the detail deriving from the very close relationship developed with the landscape through walking in and living it. As an artist in residence Nel has worked in Alcala de Jucar and in Callosa d’en Sarria. Here, whole valleys are covered with fruit nets, which you can find back in the work. The photos and collage works have also been influenced by Spain’s history, and mix of cultures, particularly Arabic and Roman architecture. It is possible to see historic monuments, like the Alhambra in Granada, the Alcázar in Sevilla, the Mesquita in Cordoba and Roman roads and bridges, mirrored in abstraction in the Collages and Paintings. The paintings and collages are a reflection of Nel’s journey and evolution in perceiving and communicating with the landscape. “Through my work I seek to enable viewers to experience more and deeper layers of the landscapeâ€.
