About Annaclara Di Biase
Annaclara Di Biase (Turin, 1977) Statement: My artistic research comes from the interest towards the malleability of the female body, for it is a privileged object and matter of esthetic consumption. My artistic practice is an answer to the need of calling into question the concepts of identity, perception and interpretation. Building ephemeral identities through second hand clothes and accessories becomes, in my poetic, a way to avert preexisting models and so to give a rise to a place in which stereotypes do not define identity anymore. La mis-en-scène becomes a private action, a secret rehearsal and the camouflage creates an intimate place that favors either the introspection and the projection towards the outside. Another element of my poetic is food because there's an interconnection between the "dressed body" and the "nourished body": the shape that a dress gives to a body could be compromised by the introduction of an excessive or scarce quantity of food. Food and domestic objects have an evocative function and often become body appendixes and expressions of the inner world. Music is the most recent element that I introduced as a part of my artistic path because it has the capacity to show the borders of the corporeal entity. The mediums that I use are: videos, painting, photography and collage. With the camera I record a performance act in which the model makes actions linked to everyday rituals like: dressing, eating, dancing and singing. Painting series come from photographic projects taken from the video performances. The production of paintings is a result of a free expression calculated in a series of thick layers of acrylic colors. The collage allows the coexistence of photos, acrylic painting and clothes in order to transpose, on the papers surface, all the problems linked to the social and cultural manipulation of the female image.
