Alchemy of Depression

My current series, The Alchemy of Depression is an attempt to honor and give expression to my depression. Jung and others emphasize the compensatory nature of depression. It serves a purpose and so is, essentially, teleological. But finding the purpose in depression is not a simple matter of tearing the wrapping paper of a birthday present. It’s a journey, a process. It requires going deeper than I imagine is possible, feeling around in the dark for the nugget of gold, and then returning to assimilate and share what I’ve found. I was struck by the similarity between my experience of depression and the stages of alchemy. I’ve not yet discovered the Philosopher's Stone so this series is still very much a work in progress.
